Bio/Research

I had been teaching in varying discourses before being appointed to the University of Victoria in 2006 and promoted to Associate Professor in 2011. I coordinate the language program as well as the PAD program and constantly design or redesign courses.

I teach courses on German as a second language, intercultural communication, foreign/second language pedagogy and research methodology. My approach starts with the student assisting her or him understanding German in terms of concepts, ideas, customs and behaviors that are part of language. Moreover, the goal of the language courses I teach at UVic is for the learner to practice German as much as possible.

As of 2012, we have a brand new language program starting in the fall. This new program offers a strong integration of language to culture, guides the student to comfortably communicate with native speakers, provides exchange opportunities and the opportunity to take the A1 and B2 exams of the Common European Framework that are necessary to work and study in the European Union.

In regards to graduate studies, I have worked with several students in the area of second/foreign language acquisition as either supervisor, second reader or external reader at the Master’s level. If you are thinking about graduate studies at UVic and have an interest in German as a second/foreign language, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Graduate courses, I have developed and taught are ‘Intercultural Communication and Foreign Language Acquisition’, ‘Teaching German as a Foreign Language’ as well as ‘New Media in Second Language Acquisition’.

In my research, I link questions of teaching to my research projects. For several years, I have worked in the area of CMC (computer mediated communication) pursuing the question of sustainability. I have published on this topic in German and English in international journals such as Foreign Language Annals, German as a Foreign Language, Zielsprache Deutsch and the Calico Journal.

Together with my colleague Dr. Catherine Caws, I have founded a research collective at UVic called TRUTH (Teaching and Research Using Technology in the Humanities). We organize a symposium once every year that is attended by sixty or more participants. In May 2011, we hosted the world famous CALICO conference that was attended by over 350 participants from around the world.

Recently, I have started a new research project that pursues the question how words are processed into long-term memory when learning another language. This project is well funded by SSHRC (Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada). The practical application will be in developing an online program for second language vocabulary acquisition.
