Dr. Bain obtained his MD degree with First-Class Standing and Distinction in 1981. After a rotating internship at the Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario, he completed his residency in Internal Medicine and Fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Alberta Hospital.

After working as an MRC Research Fellow at the Liver Unit, Kings College Hospital in London, England (studying under Dr. Roger Williams), he returned with his family to the University of Alberta in 1989, where he is now a Professor of Medicine, and Medical Director of the Liver Transplant Program.
Dr. Bain is Director of the Liver Unit at the University of Alberta, which is a major referral centre for patients with hepatobiliary diseases. The U of A Liver Transplant Program performs 70 to 80 liver transplants per year and has performed over 1300 since program inception in 1989. He enjoys working with the entire team including 8 Hepatologists, specially trained hepatology nurses and others. He is a former president of the Canadian Association for the Study of Liver Disease and in 2012 received their Distinguished Service Award.
