Bio/Research

Professor Vivek K Goyal is a principal investigator in the Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He received the B.S. degree in mathematics and the B.S.E. degree in electrical engineering (both with highest distinction) from the University of Iowa, Iowa City. He received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, where in 1998, he received the Eliahu Jury Award for outstanding achievement in systems, communications, control, or signal processing.

He was a Research Assistant in the Laboratoire de Communications Audiovisuelles at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1996. He worked in the Mathematics of Communications Research Department of Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies as an intern in 1997 and again as a Member of Technical Staff from 1998 to 2001. From 2001 to 2003 he was a Senior Research Engineer for Digital Fountain, Inc., Fremont, CA.

Professor Goyal is a Senior Member of the IEEE and serves on the IEEE Signal Processing Society's Image and Multiple Dimensional Signal Processing Technical Committee. He was awarded the 2002 IEEE Signal Processing Society Magazine Award for "Multiple Description Coding: Compression Meets the Network."
