Glenn Rowe served in the Canadian Navy for twenty-two years. He served as the navigator on one minor-war vessel, two destroyers, and one of the navy's tankers, HMCS Preserver. In addition, he taught navigation at the navy's School of Navigation in Halifax and served as the executive officer (second-in-command) on three minor-war vessels. In 1990, Professor Rowe retired from the navy and became a full time lecturer in the Faculty of Business Administration at Memorial. In 1992, he moved to College Station, Texas and attended Texas A&M University to pursue his doctoral studies in Strategic Management. He studied leadership within the context of strategic management and completed his Ph. D. in May, 1996. He rejoined the Faculty of Business Administration at Memorial in September 1995 where he taught strategic management and strategic leadership to undergraduates, students in the MBA programs and participants in the Executive Development Program. In addition, he taught strategic leadership at Royal Roads University, Victoria, BC, as an invited professor for three years from1998 to 2000. He served as the Director of the Centre for Management Development, and as the Director of the Executive Development Program, from June 1996 to August 1999 in the Faculty of Business Administration, Memorial University of Newfoundland. He was the Associate Dean, Graduate Programs and Research, for the Faculty of Business Administration from February 2000 to April 2001.

Professor Rowe joined the Richard Ivey School of Business as a faculty member on July 1, 2001. He served as the faculty advisor for the PhD Program in General Management (including Strategy, International Business, Entrepreneurship, Sustainability and Business, Economics and Public Policy) from January 2002 to June 2009. He teaches Strategic Analysis and Action to EMBAs, a Corporate Strategy elective to MBAs and a Strategic Leadership elective to HBA2s (senior undergraduates). He taught a doctoral strategy seminar from 2003 to 2009. He was appointed the inaugural holder of the Paul MacPherson Chair in Strategic Leadership in July 2002. He was the Director of Ivey's Executive MBA Program from July 2009 to June 2012.

Professor Rowe's research is in the area of strategic leadership and Strategic Management and he has published several journal articles and made numerous presentations at annual meetings of the Academy of Management, Strategic Management Society, Southern Management Association, Project Management Institute, Administrative Sciences Association of Canada, and Atlantic Schools of Business conferences. He serves as a reviewer for several academic journals and is active in the community where he has served as the Vice-Chair and member of the Board of Directors of The International Alliance for Missions and has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Newfoundland and Labrador Employers' Council. Finally, he is an active consultant and has facilitated strategic thinking sessions for several organizations such as the Association of Canadian Publishers, the Alliance for the Control of Tobacco (Newfoundland and Labrador), the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association, Fishery Products International, Gros Morne National Park, and Sir Wilfred Grenfell College.

Professor Rowe is currently working on several studies using data from the National Hockey League (NHL). In one study he is examining whether NHL General Managers can be a source of sustained competitive advantage. In a related study he is asking why this might be the case. This study uses interviews with thirty-three current and former NHL GMs. In another study he is examining the mediating effect of teamwork on the relationships between leader excellence (using NHL coaches), team member turnover, team-player talent and team performance.

He has two published studies using data from the NHL. The first study (Rowe, Cannella, Rankin, and Gorman, 2005) examined the impact of coach and General Manager turnover on team performance. The second study (Audas, Goddard, and Rowe, 2006), examined the causes and consequences of coach turnover in the NHL on a game-by-game basis. Copies of these papers are available from Professor Rowe.

In 2009, he completed a study (Lehmberg, Rowe, White and Phillips) on whether CEOs formerly from General Electric are expected to perform better than CEOs who are recruited from the normal CEO labour market.
