My research interests focus on the impact of environmental challenge, especially low oxygen and temperature extremes, on metabolic pathways. Current activities include: cardiac adaptations to anoxia, glycerol as a protective agent against low temperature, and control of protein synthesis. Experiments are conducted with a range of animals and tissues and at different levels of organization ranging from isolated proteins to whole animal cardiovascular performance. Furthermore, studies are designed to exploit the unique properties of selected marine organisms to lend fundamental insights into human disease issues such as diabetes and myocardial ischemia.
