Bio/Research

Dr. Mackillop is a Radiation Oncologist and professor of Oncology at Queen's University. He also heads the Department of Community Health and Epidemiology. Dr. Mackillop has published extensively regarding timely access to health care (measurement, predictors, and impact of wait times for radiotherapy) and appropriate access to care (measurement, predictors, and impact of radiotherapy utilization in Ontario). His studies of access to radiotherapy (RT) were the first of their kind, and have contributed to changes in public policy in Ontario. Dr. Mackillop has led the development of two methods for estimating the appropriate rate of use of RT intended for use in planning and auditing RT system performance: evidence-based requirements analysis (EBRA), and "benchmark" establishing research (Criterion-Based Benchmarking). These approaches to measuring utilization have had significant impact provincially, nationally and internationally in facilitating the interpretation of targets for utilization rates in radiotherapy. Methodologic research by his research team has produced innovations such as methods to estimate lifetime treatment utilization rates with incomplete follow-up information, and methods to identify patients likely to require palliative care.
