Sala-i-Martin, a professor of economics at Columbia University, is an internationally known expert on economic growth who in recent years has published authoritative research on global incomes. He is a major proponent of the view that economic inequality has decreased globally and has introduced in academic circles the concept of an emerging global middle class. In 2004, Sala-i-Martin was awarded the King Juan Carlos I Prize in economics.
