Bio/Research

We are interested in understanding how the microbial virulence strategies affect the nature and magnitude of the host response and how the resulting immune response influences the course of infection.

The long-term goal of the laboratory is to understand how bacterial pathogens (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella) initiate their infectious processes in bovine mammary glands and intestines in farm animals (cows, pigs and chickens), how host animals respond to bacterial invasion and how mastitis and intestinal diseases can be prevented by development of vaccines, probiotics and prebiotics.

Specifically, we study bacterial ligands that bind to specific host receptors and mediate bacterial colonization, host cell signaling, and host immune responses. In addition, probiotics and prebiotics are being investigated as alternatives to antibiotics for animal production.
