Bio/Research

Xuefei Ren received her MA in Urban Planning from Tokyo Metropolitan University and her PhD in Sociology from the University of Chicago. Her research interests are urban governance, development, architecture and urbanism, India and China. She is the author of two books—Building Globalization: Transnational Architecture Production in Urban China (2011, University of Chicago Press) and Urban China (2013, Polity Press), and has published widely in both urban studies and sociology journals. She has received numerous awards and fellowships, with the most recent ones including a residential fellowship from the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, DC in 2011-2012, and the Best Book Award from the Political Economy of the World System Section of the American Sociological Association in 2012. Currently, she is working on a comparative and historical project on urban governance and citizen rights in India and China.
