Yingjiu Li is an academic expert in cybersecurity, data security, privacy in the “Internet of Things,” mobile and system security, applied cryptography and cloud security, data application security and privacy. At the University of Oregon, he is a professor of computer and information science. The motivation of his research is to discover the vulnerabilities in information systems and services, and design effective solutions to mitigate the vulnerabilities and provide better usability.
One example of his recent work discovers that most face authentication systems are vulnerable to media-based facial forgery in which adversaries use other users’ photos or videos taken from online social networks to circumvent face authentication systems. To address this vulnerability, he and his collaborators developed novel liveness detection technologies to distinguish between legitimate face biometrics of live users and forged face biometrics.
Another example of his work is in the area of radio frequency identification (RFID) systems, where he and his collaborators developed several fundamental privacy frameworks for designing and analyzing secure RFID communication protocols. Also, in the area of mobile and system security, Yingjiu and his collaborators revealed a series of attacks on iOS and Android, and thus helped Apple and Google in rectifying the problems in their smartphone systems.
Yingjiu has published more than 140 technical papers in international conferences and journals, and served in the technical program committees for over 80 international conferences and workshops, including top-tier cybersecurity conferences and journals.
