Bio/Research

Xavier Fernando received a B.Sc.Eng. (Hons) degree from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, in 1992, placing first out of 250 students on the Dean's list. He received a Master's from the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand, placing first out of 27 students and was nominated for a Gold Medal in 1994. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Calgary, Canada, in 2001.

Fernando worked for AT&T (Telecom Products) as an R&D engineer from 1994 to 1997. He has been with the Electrical Engineering Department at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU, formerly Ryerson) since 2001 and was a member of the university's Board of Governors from 2009 to 2011. Before that, he was a visiting faculty researcher at the Institute of Advanced Telecommunications (IAT), University of Swansea, UK, in 2008. Fernando is the author of more than seventy research articles and a patent, a co-author and editor of the IEEE COMSOC Wireless Communication Body of Knowledge (WEBOK) and leads TMU's Communications Research Lab. In addition, he has delivered invited talks worldwide, including at Cambridge University (UK), Princeton University (USA), Athens Institute of Technology (Greece), National Research Council (Canada) and Anna University (India).

Fernando is in the IEEE COMSOC Education Board Working Group on Wireless Communications, is the Chair of the IEEE Communications Society, Toronto Chapter and is a senior member of IEEE. In addition, he was the General Chair for IEEE Toronto International Conference on Science and Technology for Humanity 2009. He has obtained funding from the Finnish International Development Agency (FINNIDA), Alberta Informatics Circle of Research Excellence (ICORE), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada, the Canadian Foundation of Innovations (CFI), Ontario Innovations Trust Fund (OIT) and Canadian Photonic Fabrication Research (CPFR).
