The major thrust of my research is on the hormonal regulation of mineral and skeletal homeostasis. This includes the study of the interaction of cancer with the skeleton as a special focus. In these studies the major hormonal mediators which have been examined include parathyroid hormone, parathyroid hormone-related peptide, vitamin D and calcitonin. The approach to these investigations has been mainly biochemical, cell biological and molecular biological however integrative physiological approaches both in animals and man have also been employed. These studies have relevance to non-metastatic malignancy and malignancy which is metastatic to bone, to osteoporosis, and to both primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism and are elucidating basic mechanisms underlying these clinical disorders.
